What Does “Industry Experience Required” Mean in a Marketing Job Advert?

Posted on 21 July 2026

“Previous industry experience required.”

It’s a phrase marketing candidates regularly encounter in job adverts, but how seriously should you take it?

Sometimes direct sector experience is genuinely essential. In other cases, an employer may consider someone from a related industry who can demonstrate the right transferable experience.

Understanding the difference can help you focus on the roles where you have the strongest chance of progressing.

Why do employers ask for industry experience?

Hiring someone who already understands the industry can reduce the time they need to become effective.

They may already be familiar with the customers, competitors, terminology and commercial challenges influencing the organisation’s marketing decisions.

Industry knowledge can be particularly important when a role involves:

  • A regulated environment

  • Complex or technical products

  • Specialist audiences

  • Unusual routes to market

  • Long sales cycles

  • Strict advertising requirements

It may also be essential for a fixed-term role where the employer needs someone who can get up to speed quickly.

In these circumstances, industry experience isn’t simply another item on an employer’s wish list. It is a considered part of the brief.

Pay attention to the wording

If an advert describes industry experience as essential, required or necessary, it should usually be treated as a genuine requirement.

Applying without it may not be the best use of your time, particularly if the advert explains why that knowledge is important.

However, words such as preferred, desirable or advantageous suggest there may be more flexibility.

The employer might consider someone from another sector who understands:

  • A similar customer or audience

  • The same route to market

  • A comparable sales cycle

  • A related regulatory environment

  • Similar products or buying behaviours

  • The challenges of multi-site or international marketing

You may not have worked for a direct competitor, but your experience could still be relevant.

Make the connection clear

If you apply for a role outside your current industry, don’t expect the employer to identify the similarities for you.

Use your CV to explain the audiences, products and commercial environments you understand. Bring the most relevant experience towards the top rather than relying on your job title to tell the full story.

For example, make it clear if you have:

  1. Marketed to a similar audience

  2. Worked in a regulated sector

  3. Supported a long B2B sales process

  4. Managed e-commerce or retail campaigns

  5. Launched products into new markets

  6. Worked across several locations or countries

At interview, explain why your experience is transferable and give examples of how you have successfully learned a new product, audience or market before.

Should you still apply?

Start with how the requirement is described.

If direct industry experience is clearly essential, be realistic about whether you meet the brief.

If it is preferred, consider whether you understand a similar audience, product or commercial model. If you can make a strong connection and meet the other central requirements, the opportunity may still be worth pursuing.

Industry experience can matter, but relevance is more detailed than a sector name.

Read the advert carefully, focus on the roles that genuinely match your experience and make any transferable knowledge easy to recognise.
